It's going to be the biggest superhero mash-up we've ever seen, rounding up Avengers, Guardians, Doctors, and men both Spider- and Ant-, so it's perhaps not surprising that Avengers: Infinity War will need a hefty old budget.

But a new article published in The Daily Record suggests that this could be the most expensive movie EVER made, with a budget of $400 million.

The current record for the most costly movie goes to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which tallied in at $378.5 in 2011.

The report from the Scottish publication focuses on plans for the superhero sequel to be shot in various locations in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Highlands and does not cite a source for the figure.

However, it's entirely plausible. Avengers: Age of Ultron came in at $279.9m and is currently the third most expensive movie (number two is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End).

The first Avengers movie is currently the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time, taking more than $1.5bn, with Age of Ultron at number seven with $1.4bn.

So, frankly, they can probably afford to spend a few quid.

Originally planned as a two-parter to be directed by the Russo brothers, Avengers: Infinity War will no longer be a 'part one' but more of a standalone, to be followed by a second, currently untitled Avengers film in 2019.

The cast list hasn't been officially announced in full but the Russos have said that there could be as many as 67 characters popping up, which is likely to include Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye and other Avengers, as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and possibly our first encounter with Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

However much it costs, it's going to be MASSIVE.

Avengers: Infinity War will open in UK cinemas on April 27, 2018
