NBC Chairman Andy Lack addressed sexual harassment allegations against former anchor Tom Brokaw in a memo sent to staffers Friday.
He also suggested that an investigation into Matt Lauer’s alleged sexual misconduct was nearing its end and that findings would be shared with staff members next week.
The missive, sent a day after the Brokaw allegations surfaced, opens with a line asserting that Brokaw denies the claims made against him.
It also assures employees that NBC takes “allegations such as these very seriously.”
The Washington Post and Variety published reports Thursday that Linda Vester, a former Middle East correspondent, said Brokaw sexually harassed her when she was in her 20s.
Another woman—a former production assistant for the news network—accused the former news anchor of touching her inappropriately.
Brokaw penned an angry email Friday complaining that he had been “ambushed and then perp walked across the pages of The Washington Post and Variety as an avatar of male misogyny, taken to the guillotine and stripped of any honor and achievement I had earned in more than a half century of journalism and citizenship.”
Lack told employees that a “substantial culture assessment” was underway at the news network, and that workplace training sessions for 1,600 employees had been successful.
“Once again, our highest priority is to ensure we have a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected. We are absolutely committed to making this a reality—there can be no exception,” Lack ended his note.
