HYDERABAD: About 50 per cent structures in Hyderbad have building plan deviations while 10 per cent of them are illegal, show records available with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). As per its data, there are 22 lakh households within GHMC's jurisdiction.
Some of the common violations include building of additional floors, constructing pent houses, not complying with the mandatory setback norm (distance between structure and compound wall), not providing adequate parking space and building flats in the area earmarked for cellar.
These illegal structures - scattered across the city including areas like Banjara Hills, Punjagutta, Begumpet, Kukatpally, Alwal, L B Nagar - have led to a slew of problems, rue officials. The scarcity of drinking water, chocking of sewage lines due to water logging and congestion in bylanes are just some of them.

There are other concerns. "Recently, the builder of our adjacent apartment complex started constructing a lift right in the setback area of our building. While the work was stalled for sometime, after I have complained to the authorities, he has resumed work again this week," said a resident of Padmarao Nagar. Experts term these structures as dangerous.
"Adding of illegal floors, for instance, increases the load on the soil and pillars. It's dangerous both for people occupying the building and those living in its vicinity," said SP Anchuri, vice-president (south), Structural Engineers World Congress.
