Smriti Zubin Irani, born Smriti Malhotra on 23rd March 1976, is a prominent figure in Indian politics. She is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member and has held several key positions in the Union Cabinet.
Born and raised in New Delhi, India, she comes from a diverse family background. Her paternal family includes Punjabi and Maharashtrian heritage, while her maternal family has a Bengali heritage. Before entering politics, she had a successful career in the entertainment industry. She was an actress, fashion model, and television producer.
Her political journey began in 2003 when she joined the BJP. She served as the National President of the BJP Mahila Morcha, the party’s women’s wing, from 2010 to 2013. In 2011, she became a member of the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, she contested against Rahul Gandhi in the Amethi Constituency and although she lost, her spirited campaign made a strong impression.
Her ministerial journey began in 2014 when she was appointed as the Minister of Human Resource Development. She was the youngest minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second ministry in 2019.
She served as the Minister of Textiles from 2016 to 2021 and the Minister of Information and Broadcasting from 2017 to 2018. Since 2019, she has been serving as the Minister of Women and Child Development. In 2022, she also assumed the role of Minister of Minority Affairs, becoming the first non-Muslim to hold the position.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, she contested again from the Amethi constituency and emerged victorious, defeating Rahul Gandhi. This victory was historic as the Gandhi family had represented the constituency for much of the previous four decades.

New Delhi, Feb 26 (ANI): Confirming his attendance at the ‘Mahishasura festival’ of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 2011, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Udit Raj on Friday said that he changed his thoughts after joining the saffron party. Raj further stated that Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani’s remarks on the Mahishasura event were political and he attended the event as an activist then. Irani had yesterday created a huge uproar in the Rajya Sabha by reading out a document on the Mahishasur Puja, observed on the JNU campus every October since 2011.

Hyderabad, Feb 26 (ANI): The on-duty Chief Medical Officer M. Rajshree, who confirmed Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula's death, has repudiated HRD Minister Smriti Irani's assertion in the Parliament, saying she had reached the scene in three-five minutes. She further said that a group of students took her to the room where Rohith had attempted suicide and the police asked her if she could predict the time of Vemula's death. Irani on Wednesday pointed out that according to a report submitted to the Telangana High Court, the police had reached the hospital at 7:20 pm when they found the body.

New Delhi, Feb 24 (ANI): Accusing the main opposition of practicing "political opportunism" Union Human Resource and Development Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday sought to know as to where was Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi when more than 600 students died during the Telangana movement. Irani said "Today I am being accused of discrimination. One student dies and there is political battle over it. In my 20 months as minister, I have served my country, people without any prejudice. I did my duty, and I won't apologise for it," said Irani in response to Vemula's suicide in Parliament's Budget Session. She added "I have been accused that with which authority, do I to write letters Universities? Just because I contested from Amethi, you would crucify me."

New Delhi, Feb 12 (ANI): Speaking about an event at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said that whatever happened at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was inappropriate. He said strict action will be taken against the anti-national elements. He added that if anyone raises anti-India slogans and tries to raise question on nation's unity and integrity, they would not be spared.
