Tottenham set to extend Jan Vertonghen’s contract by another year with deal running out in 2019
Belgian defender is one of the first names on the team-sheet under Mauricio Pochettino
TOTTENHAM defender Jan Vertonghen is poised to agree a new contract with the club.
The 31-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season, but a one-year extension will be offered.
Since joining from Ajax back in the summer of 2012, Vertonghen has been one of the first names on the team-sheet.
His current terms were agreed in December 2016.
Speaking about his future, the Belgian centre-half said: "My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year.
"I think they will take up the option. We'll see what happens."
Vertonghen shows no signs of letting standards slip, starring for Belgium in their World Cup campaign this summer.
He also became the first player to reach 100 caps for Belgium.

And the man himself is adamant he will continue to play a the highest level until his late 30s.
Speaking back in the winter of 2016, Vertonghen said: "It’s very hard to finish your career at this level as it demands a lot of your body.
"But I will try and I’m doing everything I can to stay as fit as possible to compete for as long as I can at this level.
"Not a lot of players can play here until they're 36 or 37 but I will do my best to play here as long as I can."
