AMISOM Deputy Force Commander receives grand send off in Somalia after tour of duty

MOGADISHU – The outgoing Deputy Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in charge of Support and Logistics, Maj. Gen. Nakibus Lakara, was honoured in a send-off Friday, following the completion of his tour of duty in Somalia.

Maj. Gen. Lakara was congratulated by Hon. Lydia Wanyoto, the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC) for Somalia, who praised his leadership abilities and contribution to efforts to restore peace in Somalia.

“On behalf of the AMISOM family, we want to thank you for putting your building block to this mission… but most important, for providing exemplary leadership in the mission,” DSRCC Wanyoto said.

AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Osman Noor Soubagleh noted that Maj. Gen. Lakara played a significant role in logistical support operations to the Mission.

“Our success in operations is reflective on his unique leadership despite the challenges of working in a multi-agency environment. Most recently, we have prepared AMISOM to provide security for the Somali electoral process. During his tenure, we have also set the conditions for close collaborative work with SNA and he has been the driving force behind maintaining the good reputation of AMISOM under the most challenging circumstances,” the Force Commander said.

In his remarks, Maj. Gen. Lakara acknowledged the military successes against violent extremism and terrorism in Somalia, but added that a lot still needed to be done. He hailed international partners such as the European Union (EU) for their support to the Mission, which he added was critical in enabling the deployment of troops.

“The reason we are in Somalia is to ensure the people are free from oppression of these extremist ideologues. This is our contribution to ensure Somalia attains peace and stability. The Somali people are a resilient nation. I just hope that they can use that tenacity to defeat these extremists with the support of AMISOM and the international community,” he stated.

Maj. Gen. Lakara was in Somalia for one and half years.
