The United Nations Security Council Resolution 2628 has authorized the African Union Peace and Security Council to reconfigure AMISOM and replace it with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), with effect from 1 April 2022.

Ghana – Police

Ghana was one of the first countries to deploy Police officers within the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

So far, the West African country has deployed 56 police officers comprising of 55 Individual Police Officers (IPO) and one Senior Leadership Team (SLT) officer, Dr. Benjamin Agordzo the AMISOM police training coordinator.

AU Police - Ghana

Somalia, Mogadishu – AU Police on duty at Mogadishu Airport. The AU Police Force is assisting with general policing in the Somali capital. The AU police force is made up of officers from across the African Union including Sierra Leone and Ghana. AU/UN IST/ANTHONY HUNT

IPOs role is to build the capacity of the Somali Police Force (SPF) by mentoring and advising SPF on police duties, such as human rights observation, crime prevention strategies, community policing, search procedures and investigations. They also conduct training and refresher course for SPF middle level officers and new recruits as well as running courses in traffic management and criminal investigation techniques.

On 9th October 2013, 6 Ghanaian individual police officers were deployed to Baidoa and Beledweyne and are co-located with the Somali Police Force.
