Admirals Briefs: Erie Goalie Joins Saurdiff As Scorer

Admirals Briefs

December 20, 1995|By AL PEARCE Daily Press

No longer is the Hampton Roads Admirals' Corwin Saurdiff the only goalie in East Coast Hockey League history with a goal on his resume. Friday night, Erie goalie Olie Sundstrom joined the club by scoring a late-game goal into an empty net as the Panthers beat Wheeling 6-4.

Trailing 5-4, Wheeling pulled its goalie late in the game. Sundstrom collected the puck beside his net and fired a length-of-the-ice shot that lit the light with 1:57 remaining. Surdiff was the first ECHL goalie to score, netting a length-of-the-ice shot March 18 against Charlotte in a 5-2 victory.

ROCKET MAN. Veteran center Rod Taylor continues to approach several franchise records in his fifth year with the team.

The 29-year-old has 284 career points (159 goals, 125 assists), one point from tying Victor Gervais for second on the team's all-time scoring list. Brian Martin is No. 1 with 346 points (171 goals and 175 assists) in 184 games.

Taylor has appeared in 230 games, 16 fewer than record-holder Dennis McEwen, and is only 12 goals behind Martin, the team's all-time leader.

SENN SUSPENDED. The ECHL's resident bad boy has been suspended five games for throwing his stick into the seats of the Richmond Coliseum last week. Trevor Senn of Richmond will sit out until the Renegades play the Admirals in Scope Dec. 27.

ECHL commissioner Pat Kelly imposed the penalty after Senn flung his stick after getting a game misconduct Dec. 12. A fan caught it in a lower-level section.

Senn has been whistled for 20 major penalties and seven game misconducts this season. He leads the league with 252 penalty minutes, many of them for fighting.

ECHL STATS. These are the ECHL's major statistical leaders through games of Sunday night:
