And Here’s Me With…

RAMADI, IRAQ — In Iraq’s western Anbar Province, President-elect Barack Obama already figures prominently in framed pictures on the walls of mudhifs, or tribal guest rooms, and is now frequently evoked in the discourse of the sheiks, or tribal leaders.

While still on the campaign trail, Mr. Obama visited Iraq in July as part of his world tour. He traveled to Anbar to meet with the Sunni Arab tribal sheiks there. The sheiks are credited with mobilizing a rebellion by tribesmen against Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia in Anbar but are now enmeshed in a power struggle among themselves and with Sunni Arab political parties.

At the mudifh of Sheik Ahmed Abu Risha, who now views himself as the paramount sheik of Anbar, copies of the sheik’s own newspaper Sahwat al-Iraq (Iraq’s Awakening) are scattered around.

“Abu Risha Congratulates Obama on his Victory,” reads the first half of the big bold headline. A photo of the sheik with Mr. Obama during his Anbar visit is splashed on the front page.

In classic tribal fashion, and to make sure the sheik covers all his bases in the event things do not pan out as expected, the second half of that same bold headline reads as follows: “And he lauds McCain as a Contemporary Leader.” The back of the paper has a photo collage of both men with the caption in big red letters: “Obama, the Lord of the White House.”

Over a breakfast of camel’s milk, honey and flat bread at his mansion, Sheik Abu Risha expresses his admiration for Mr. Obama but confides that there is a special place for President Bush in his heart.

As he talks he pulls out a pen — which bears the White House emblem and is etched with the president’s signature — from the top pocket of his tribal dress. It was given to him when he met with President Bush in June.

In Anbar and other tribal societies across Iraq and the Middle East, many sheiks and rulers view an association with Mr. Obama, President Bush, other officials in the Bush administration and the American military brass as tantamount to a badge of honor, a seal of approval, a sign of power and a source of pride among their people.

Despite all the talk about its battered and tattered reputation around the world, because of the war in Iraq to some extent, America is still regarded by Iraqis as this century’s colonial power and patron. At least by the sheiks and those who benefit from its friendship or largesse.

“We met Obama in Anbar and we told him inshallah (God willing) you win and we also told him to back the tribes and not the political parties,” Sheik Hamid al-Hayis of the Albu-Dhiab tribe pronounced in a gathering at his mudifh on Friday.

Sheiks were dressed in their finest robes and clutched sparkling worry beads. A servant passed around a first round of little cups of sugary tea, followed by a round of bitter Arabian coffee and back to a round of sugary tea.

On one wall in the mudhif were portraits of Sheik Hamid’s brother Sheik Mohammed, posing with President Bush during a visit to Washington last year.

he’s talking to a terrorist!!! lol, hope Obama makes some good changes but still smart enough to not alter main American values.

The moral failure of the US is the paramount issue here.

The standing of the US in the world community has plummeted due to its illegal actions, including many breaches of sovereignty in recent years and the needless slaughter of civilians. The end does not justify the means, otherwise you are on the road to nazism.

International law must be upheld by everyone.

The US has lost the battle for hearts and minds world wide through its self-serving foreign policies that will only lead to an increased risk of terrorist attacks on US interests world wide.

International Law must not be used to protect dictators and other acts of genocide by claiming the right of sovereignty. Basic Human Rights are more important.

Losing the hearts and minds of people who don’t care about the oppressed people of the world does not matter.

The U.S. doesn’t slaughter civilians. Soldiers, while guarding civilians, are being shot by terrorists. They shoot back to stay alive and accidentally kill civilians in the process. Terrorists also use civilians as human cover regularly, because they don’t care about the life around them, all the care about is the reward they have been taught to die for.

The U.S. doesn’t actually have only self-serving policies, unless you count all of the charity that comes from the U.S. as simply seeking some later reward from the poor it helps. And if nations can be criticized for acting in a self-serving manner, then so can everyone who, when starving, would eat the bread of another starving person.

Let anyone who does not wish to reap the benefits of the self-service of nations travel to lands where no nation will provide them benefits.

A precept: “Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.” —the Word of God, known as our Bible.
The Quran teaches to “live by the sword”, thus militantism. Jesus led by example and said to be loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, meek, a servant, faithful to God, unselfish, lowly, and thankful. This is how to enter the Kingdom of God.

There are none so blind as they who do not want to see…

In terms of bringing about peace, there is never peace without a political settlement and the unfortunately the example provided by the US is always a “weapons” based answer or military measures. Not a good example to set for the rest of the world and one that is doomed to failure.

The US has waged what is effectively “terrorism” whatever you choose to call it. Hiding behind christian dogma is embarrassing and cowardly.

In fact, U.S. political settlements are quite often not military measures or weapons based.

“Those who live by the sword will die by the sword.” If this wasn’t true, Hussein could have been peacefully voted out of office. No need for outside intervention.

Too bad we couldn’t peacefully vote Bush out of office either. He lost, but it would have taken violence to actually crowbar him from the presidency. BTW, there’s a good reason millions of muslims refer to westerners as “crusaders,” and it has everything to do with christianity, or just death, being spread by the sword. What Jesus says and what most christians do are two very different things.
