What reproductive rights should we be fighting for in 21st century Europe? Does denying women access to contraception and abortion contravene women's basic human rights? Do new reproductive technologies change our conceptions of reproduction and motherhood? Do women have a right to IVF and other assisted reproductive techniques or are such treatments luxuries? Are reproductive rights exclusively women's rights? Can there be a universal standard of basic reproductive rights and are they context dependent? In attempting to answer such burning questions for women in the 21st e century this book brings together work from international authors. It addresses thee issues from various disciplines and perspectives asking crucial questions about the status of women's rights, particularly their reproductive rights, in the current context. It does this by outlining the current state of reproductive rights in Europe, by considering the rapidly changing face of reproductive rights as new technologies revolutionise reproductive capability and finally by projecting possible futures of women's reproductive rights. |

HEATHER WIDDOWS is a Lecturer at the Centre for the Study of Global Ethics, University of Birmingham, UK. Her research interests include the foundations of moral values from a philosophical perspective, including moral realism, relativism and universalism; communication across belief-systems and value frameworks in the context of liberal democracies. Her publications include The Moral Vision of Iris Murdoch in addition to articles and book chapters on all her areas of interest. ITZIAR ALKORTA IDIAKEZ is Associated Professor for Private Law at the University of the Basque Country, Spain. She has published many articles on genetics and reproductive technologies regulation. She is a Researcher in the European Commission's Fifth and Sixth Research Framework Programmes and at the Hastings Centre (New York, USA). She is an advisor on biomedical law to the Carlos III National Institute of Health, Spain, the Basque government and other governmental agencies in Spain. AITZIBER EMALDI CIRION is Associated Professor for Law and Biotechnology, at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. She has published many articles on the judicial implications of cloning, individualized medicine and assisted reproductive techniques. She is a Researcher in the European Commission's Fifth and Sixth Research Framework Programmes and advisor on biomedical law to the Basque Governmental Health System (OSAKIDETZA, Spain) and other agencies. |
