Charlie,a movie scripted by the gifted writer Unni R together with the director Martin Prakkat, at one level is yet another movie for, and of, the youth - with all the associated exuberance, energy, zest, hilariousness, love and passion. However, it manages to stand apart from the usual. It successfully attempts to weave in threads of emotion laced with compassion, to come out with a colourful fabric - a feel-good, straight forward, fast paced entertainer.
The movie revolves around Charlie, enacted charmingly and with ease by Dulquer Salmaan, and Tessa, enacted with equal ease and brilliance by Parvathy. Charlie prefers to be a free bird, moving from one place to another immersed in self-less deeds and in that process getting himself an inerasable spot in the hearts of all who he meets. Tessa is a bold, smart, bubbly girl, a graphic designer by profession, who escapes from her job and then runs out of her family who wants her to get married and enter a conventional stereotype life. She happens to rent a place which was previously Charlie's home. In the difficult process of tidying up the room, she stumbles upon an incomplete graphic illustration left by Charlie. Her inquisitiveness to know the subsequent untold episodes of the story then gets transformed to her wild chase after the elusive Charlie. Slowly she gets enamored of the mystery-filled and strange stories about him and ultimately gets intensely attracted to him - a man whom she has never met.
In the fray are other blessed great artistes such as Nedumudi Venu,KPAC Lalitha, Kalpana,P Balachandran,Aparna Gopinath,Chemban Vinod, Soubin Shaheer et al all of whom present characters who the titular two-some come across along their journeys from one place to another and on Tessa's way to finding Charlie - perhaps depicting the endless pursuits of human beings for various types of partnerships, relationships or companionships.
Excellent story-telling by Unni staying true to the central story-line - particularly his catchy one-liners, adept direction by Martin Prakkat, stand-out cinematography by Jomon T John, and brilliant soulful music and background score by Gopi Sundar, 'Charlie' is a well-crafted, feel good entertainment package.
