The president of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov signed several decrees in the education sphere during an expanded government meeting, an official Turkmenian source said.

According to the document, general secondary schools will switch to a 12-year education starting from the 2013/2014 academic year.

The ministries of education and justice have been instructed to make proposals on the respective amendments and supplements to the national legislation.

Education at secondary school will start at the age of 6, and primary education will continue from classes 1 to 4.

Main secondary education will cover 5th - 10th study years and upper secondary education will be completed during the last 11th - 12th study years when students will be granted the possibility to choose the field of study they are interested in.

The new regulation was adopted to achieve better results in preparation of qualified specialists with good skills of using innovative technologies.
