Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral march of Socialist Popular Alliance Party founding member Fathy Ghareeb, which took place Wednesday afternoon from Omar Makram Mosque near Tahrir Square to the cemetery where the slain protester has been buried.
Ghareeb died following Tuesday's mass demonstrations, following exposure to tear gas fired by the Central Security Forces (CSF) in Tahrir Square.
The party released a statement commemorating founding member Ghareeb, stating that he lost his life in the square because of the security forces' use of tear gas in an attempt to forcefully break up the sit-in in which he was participating.
The statement said that Ghareeb started to suffocate in the party's tent in the square and was then transported to Hilal Hospital, where he died minutes after entering the intensive care unit.
The statement added that a report was filed with Qasr Al-Nil prosecution, accusing the interior minister of killing Ghareeb.
Clashes have been ongoing around Tahrir Square since protesters began engaging in street fights with police on 19 November, during demonstrations held in memory of last year's Mohamed Mahmoud Street clashes, when 46 demonstrators lost their lives.
