Businesses have been closing early, to allow staff to start their lengthy journeys home.

Many roads have been blocked. This is Sharjah's King Abdul Aziz Street. The Emirates Highway - which links Dubai to Sharjah - is flooded at many of its major junctions.

The flooding is an unusual sight in the normally dry and dusty desert emirate.
