BBC News website reader Ed Vallance spent a week travelling with a group of Nenets, reindeer herders in the Siberian arctic.
"In the morning the herders get the reindeer running around so that they can select about 40 to lasso and attach to the sledges."
"Dogs are an essential part of reindeer herding. Small groups of reindeer constantly escape when on the move and if the people fail to catch them it is up to the dogs to bring them back."
"Belongings are packed onto sledges and the whole community moves to a new location with fresh grass and moss for the reindeer. Long wooden poles are used to direct the sledge reindeer."
"The Nenets sleep in a chum, a conical tent, similar to the North American tepee."
"The chief and an old man had just got back after 18 sleepless hours, out overnight in the unbearable cold, wind and rain, looking after the herd."
"Reindeer meat is their main diet, along with small amounts of bread. Usually the meat is devoured raw. Nothing is wasted, not even the blood."
