India sets up classical languages
The Indian cabinet has decided to create a category of "classical languages", starting with Tamil.

Information and Broadcasting Minister, Jaipal Reddy, said the government would consider Sanskrit and other languages for the category.

He said an expert committee, which has been set up to look into the subject, has suggested strict criteria for languages to qualify.

One would be that the language should have been in existence for 1,000 years.
