In pictures: Malaria train
Mayomba forest

The most spectacular part of the train journey is the first section between the coast and the town of Dolisie.

When the track was built in the 1920s and 30s, France forcibly recruited workers from across its central African colonies.

At least 17,000 died either from accidents or diseases like yellow fever and malaria.

The Mayombe forest was the most difficult section involving cutting a route through the thick jungle full of rivers needing bridges and hills needing tunnels.
