Girl dies after US school shooting
A 13-year-old girl who police said had been shot in the head by a fellow student at a New Mexico school has died. A 13-year-old classmate was taken into custody shortly after the incident at the school, about 33 miles (53km) north of the Mexican border. When police arrived at the school in response to an emergency call, they found the armed student, reportedly dressed in camouflage, in the lobby with a small-calibre pistol. Police said no other students were hurt, and only one shot was fired. "We don't know if there was any association between the victim and the suspect," a police spokesman said.
The school district had established a safety plan for just such a situation last year following the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado.
