Scandinavian nations Denmark and Sweden eased into the last four leaving the much-fancied French - who had won every game on their way to qualifying for the tournament - and the English in their wake.

Sweden's achievements were no surprise to anyone and they compensated for their inexperienced defence by boasting the new attacking talents of Tomas Brolin, Martin Dahlin and Kennet Andersson.

Group 2 saw international minnows Scotland lock horns with superpowers such as Holland, the CIS and Germany but they avoided the wooden spoon despite losing their first game 1-0 to the Dutch and their second 2-0 to Germany.

Scotland's swansong was a 3-0 victory over the CIS although neither side could have advanced to the next stage because of Holland's 3-1 victory over Germany thanks to goals from the awesome Dennis Bergkamp, Frank Rijkaard and Rob Witschge.

In the first semi-final, Germany never needed to get out of second gear on their way to a 3-2 victory over Sweden.

The unified German side included the likes of Karl-Heinz Riedle, Thomas Hassler and Jurgen Klinsmann and it was Riedle who hammered the final nail in the Swedish coffin with a stunning brace.

The other semi was more closely fought and although Frank Rijkaard scored late to make it 2-2, Denmark went on to win 5-4 on penalties.

Nearly 40,000 packed into Gothenburg's Nya Ullevi Stadium for the final and it was rank outsiders Denmark who got their noses in front thanks to a John Jensen strike 18 minutes into the game.

Peter Schmeichel kept the Germans at bay for much of the game and with 12 minutes remaining Kim Vilfort finished them off with a memorable strike to give Denmark the title.
