There is a huge democratic deficit. Political decisions are mostly the product of powerful economic interests. The 1% fund our political parties and our media. The views and opinions of the public on issues like the NHS, energy and rampant inequality are being ignored.

We need to shift the power so state decisions reflect the will of the UK public. Many campaigns’ existance can be directly linked to a deficit in the UK democracy. The privatisation of the NHS and fracking are not wanted by the UK public at large. We need to pull all these threads together to mend our torn democracy.

DEFEND DEMOCRACY. 

OUR DEMOCRACY IS UNDER ATTACK FROM MANY FRONTS. THE ATTACK IS STEALTHY AND POWERFUL. FROM OVERARCHING FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS (TTIP CETA AND TiSA) to NUMEROUS FORMS OF LEGISLATON , RIGHT DOWN TO LOCAL COUCIL BYELAWS (KEEP OFF THE GRASS!)  THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IS STEADILY MADE POWERLESS AND IRRELEVANT. WE NEED TO WIN IT BACK NON-VIOLENTLY AND WE NEED EVERYONE TO PARTICPATE. ITS YOUR DEMOCRACY TOO!

The Occupation will be the rallying point to join together from all our backgrounds, using the energy of the amazing actions that will be happening between now and then. It will be the start of a campaign for a sane and just democracy, that isn’t about just voting but about changing the conversation and mobilising people so those votes can really count.

For too long our energies have been taken up by firefighting the worst new disasters to be imposed – fracking, privatisation of the NHS, cuts targeting the elderly and disabled – the list goes on!

To reclaim democracy we need to get on the front foot by channeling the energy from these defensive campaigns into a movement about the much better, fairer, happier world we are for.

We want to bring alive a movement that is able to take action over the institutions that have power over us. The late Tony Benn had five questions of power.

1. What power do you have?

2. Where did you get it from?

3. To whom are you accountable?

4. In whose interest do you exercise it?

5. How can we get rid of you?

Of these the fifth is most important. The late Tony Benn noted that those with power do not like democracy and that is why every generation must struggle to win and keep it. We need to demand answers from them
