The Musée de Préhistoire Libanaise is the first Prehistory museum in the Arab Middle East. It was officially inaugurated in June 2000 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Université Saint-Joseph of Beirut. The Museum houses exceptional collections-stone tools, animal and human bones, neolithic pottery and other items assembled by Jesuit scholars since the 19th century, from major prehistoric sites in Lebanon. These collections represent a unique reference for Prehistory in Lebanon and until the late 1990, they were only accessible to specialists. By exhibiting part of this unique collection, the University enables a much wider public to discover a significant part of Lebanon's history.
