MUMBAI: After
Infibeam's Pi — the country's first
e-book reader — which was launched at the beginning of this year, India will have its second such device, the
Wink XTS, which will begin retailing from September 1. Launched by
EC Media International, the new gadget is said to support up to 15 Indian scripts.
E-book readers gained prominence in November 2007 when Amazon's Kindle sold out in five and a half hours of its release.
While the device was not the first ever e-book reader to have been launched, the premise of e-ink caught the imagination of a critical mass — and players such as
Sony,
Samsung, PocketBook,
iPapyrus Inc, and Barnes and Noble rushed in to meet new market.
Still, India with its myriad languages hadn't seen any manufacturer catering to its demographic till Pi was launched.
