The GeoCities World Report Vol. 1, No. 1 August 31, 1996

IN THIS ISSUE

FROM THE DESK OF DAVID BOHNETT, CEO, GEOCITIES

I know many of you have been part of GeoCities for a while, but since this is the first chance I've had to speak to you directly, I want to welcome you and say thanks for being a member of our community. I'm excited to see that GeoCities continues to grow and prosper with your help and support.

Because even we have trouble keeping up with the dizzying pace of the changes at GeoCities, we've started this newsletter, which all GeoCitizens will get by e-mail every other Wednesday. In it you'll find news about your neighborhood, notices of new features and programs at GeoCities, and a schedule of upcoming events. We know your time is valuable, so we promise to keep it short.

You may have noticed the advertising banners that appear throughout GeoCities. We're delighted to welcome our charter sponsors into our community - after all, they're the ones who make it possible for us to provide you all the benefits of GeoCitizenship. We hope you keep them in mind when you're in a spending mood. In the months to come some of our sponsors will be offering special discounts and promotions for GeoCitizens, so watch this newsletter and our home page for announcements.

Many of you have written to us to offer your comments and criticisms, suggest new neighborhoods and features, and tell us what you do and don't like about being a GeoCitizen. We hope you'll always feel free to do that. Our primary mission is making GeoCities an inviting and exciting place for our homesteaders, and you are the inspiration for most of the things we do. Our address is comments@geocities.com - use it. Or e-mail me directly at dbohnett@geocities.com.

Thanks again for making your home on the Web at GeoCities.

David Bohnett
CEO, GeoCities

HOMESTEADERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Every day we pick one really cool homesteader site to feature on the main page of GeoCities. We find some of them ourselves, but we also want you to tell us about the neat things you've done or seen online. Click on What's Cool? on our home page to see the Cool Page Archives, and use the "vote" link to tell us what we should feature. (And yes, you absolutely can vote for your own.)

Here are a few cool homesteads you won't want to miss:

Colosseum3987: Soccer fans will never need another e-source. The #Soccer home page brings you everything you ever wanted to know about professional soccer, including Euro96 soccer teams, individual players, transfers, real-time match updates and video clips.

SiliconValley5114: Stepping Stones is a must-read for all newbies on the Net, everything you wanted to know about the online world but were afraid to ask. The basics of the Web, security online, and the all-important netiquette - how to make friends online without ticking anyone off.

Athens4189: Nature lovers probably already know the works of Loren Eiseley, but we didn't, so we're grateful to the creator of this online ode. He invites you to "print it out, join a friend under a tree somewhere, and read [Eiseley's work] aloud.... No one since Henry David Thoreau has stated the urgency of a spiritual return to the sunflower forest of our roots more eloquently."

WANT TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK? BECOME A COMMUNITY LEADER

GeoCities is *your* community, and while we're taking care of a lot of the day-to-day maintenance, we want you to be actively involved in the development of your neighborhoods. That's why we've created the Community Leaders program.

As a Community Leader for your neighborhood, you'll be an official liaison between homesteaders and the GeoCities staff by helping us identify interesting homesteads, find pages that don't comply with our content guidelines, start new neighborhoods, moderate newsgroups and chat forums, and more. We'll post Leaders' names and e-mail addresses in the neighborhoods so homesteaders will know whom to contact with questions and comments. Participation is completely voluntary, and you may resign your position at any time.

If you're interested in becoming a Community Leader, please e-mail leaders@geocities.com and tell us why you want to be considered. (Don't forget to include your home page address and member name.) We'll be choosing the first Leaders over the next few weeks.

COMING SOON TO A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU....

It would take us pages to describe all the neat things we've got in store, so here are a few to tantalize you. We'll divulge a few more in the next issue.

-- Free e-mail! Every member now can get a free e-mail address: yourmembername @geocities.com. Click on "What's New" on the home page for details.

-- Special weekly programming! Over the next few months we'll be starting a series of live evening programs in our neighborhood chat rooms. Look for movie stars in Hollywood, pro ball players in Colosseum, gourmet chefs in NapaValley...you get the picture. And if there's someone in particular you'd like to see online, let us know (comments@geocities.com)! You may even get to moderate the event.
