"Goblin's Revenge" Review

A deadly serum that causes anyone it touches to go violently insane has been stolen. Spider-Man must find the culprit before the serum is used to wreak havoc on the city. As if that weren't bad enough, someone has freed Carnage, the psychotic, super-powered serial killer, from prison -- and he's gunning for Spidey!

But even these crises pale in comparison to the revelation that is rocking Spider-Man to his very soul: the return of the Green Goblin, a foe Spidey thought was dead twice over. And the Goblin is determined to drive Spider-Man over the edge...

Two deadly enemies, brought together in an electrifying adventure that could mean the end of the amazing Spider-Man!

Remember, in the review of Carnage in New York I told you to remember the fact that Spider-Man gave the serum to Dr. Reed Richards? Good, because you see, in the very first chapter (prologue actually), the serum is stolen by somebody. The only clue left behind is a pumpkin bomb...

Okay, the main thing about this book is the idenity of the Green Goblin. If you've read the Spider-Man books since ASM #365, then the idenity of the Green Goblin is VERY easy to figure out. Here are the clues:

  1. A person looking amazingly like Norman Osborn is seen entering a building. When Spider-Man gets there, Norman is nowhere to be seen.
  2. This person is angry at Spider-Man for "killing" his friend Kraven the Hunter.
  3. This person was beaten nearly to death by Spider-Man, but Spider-Man allowed him to live. (By this time, I'd already figured out who this Green Goblin was.)
  4. This person is not as strong as Norman or Harry were.
  5. This person found out about the connections between the original Green Goblin and Spider-Man through the computers left at Kraven the Hunter's mansion.

I think that's enough clues so that you can figure out who this Green Goblin is. If not, well, I'll tell you at the bottom of this review.

The story is this, the Green Goblin stole the serum from Reed Richards. He also busts Carnage out of the Vault (to which Carnage promptly treats the people who broke him out with quick deaths). Carnage hijacks a plane, and takes it to New York, where he is eager for his rematch with Spider-Man. A very tired Spidey, who has not been getting any sleep for the past few days due to constant nightmares, is forced to take on Carnage and the Green Goblin at the same time.

To make it interesting, the Green Goblin had kidnapped Mary Jane and took her atop the George Washington Bridge. (Rememeber the scene in ASM 121 with Gwen Stacy? Yeah, that one that has been used over and over again. It's in this book too.) Naturally, Spidey saves the day. He beats Carnage by impaling him with the Green Goblin's glider. The Green Goblin flees.

Spider-Man eventually catches up to the Green Goblin, and finds that he is actually the Chameleon! Unfortunately, the Chameleon escapes, but the serum is back safe and sound. Spidey then gives the serum to Dr. Reed Richards, who makes sure that the serum is locked up safely this time around. An exhausted Spidey then goes back home to his lovely Mary Jane.

My ratings: 3 webs

This book, like Carnage in New York was average. It was a good book, but there were some nagging points. I found it improbable that an exhausted Spider-Man could beat both Chameleon and Carnage at the same time. Another nagging point is the fact that I figured out who the Green Goblin was too easily (for the record, I figured it out on page 40 in Chapter 2). Still, it was a good read, and if you enjoy fast-paced stories, you'll probably love "Goblin's Revenge."
