The GeoCities World Report Vol. 2, No. 4 February 1, 1997

IN THIS ISSUE

SO WHERE DID YOU WATCH THE SUPER BOWL?

Believe it or not, those of us who work at GeoCities like each other so much that we actually had our Super Bowl party right here in the office. It was rockin' and raucous - a keg in the conference room, six-foot-long subs on the work tables, lots of pool playing and video games on the side, and wagering right up until the very end (or at least until it was pretty clear the Packers were going to take it). It was so much fun that we don't think we're going to be able to concentrate in that room anymore. Too many pleasant memories. Maybe we need a keg at our next Friday staff meeting....David, are you listening?

A WHOLE NEW WAY TO GET HELP

Lots of people have questions about how to do things at GeoCities. So Rob, the main man in our help department, spent many long hours and late nights putting together our fantastic new GeoCities Online Help Guide. The next time you have a question, take a look at http://www.geocities.com/help/ -- we think it answers almost every question you might have about how to get around GeoCities, build your home page and manage your files. If you like it, send a note to comments@geocities.com. We're taking bets on how many fan letters Rob's going to get in the first week....

WHILE WE'RE AT IT, A WHOLE NEW WAY TO MANAGE YOUR ACCOUNT

Tired of that long utilities page with long lists of different tools? Tired of having to enter your member name and password every time you want to do something to your account? Well, we think we've come a long way toward solving those problems with our new GeoCities File Manager. It'll be up early next week, and you'll find it linked from the Utilities page at
http://www.geocities.com/Utilities/.

Enter your member information once and you'll see a list of all your files. You can choose one, or several, and copy, delete or rename them, or go directly to one of our online editors. There's also a link to the EZ Upload utility (for Netscape users). We've tested it a lot here at the GeoCities headquarters and we think it's incredibly useful.

The programmer who did it begged me not to mention his name - he's really shy. (I only agreed because he said he'd pay me. I'm still waiting.) So if you want to send fan mail about the new GeoCities File Manager, address it to The Shy Guy. We'll pass it along. And many thanks to WestHollywood Community Leader Toantom (http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/3593/) for the inspiration!

BRAND NEW: SILICONVALLEY CLASSIFIEDS

Take a look at the newest member of our classifieds family - - all the computers, software and peripherals you can imagine in SiliconValley Classifieds. It's easy to use and, best of all, it won't cost you a thing to list your items for sale. Just like our MotorCity classifieds, you're certain to find what you're looking for (we even found a used laser printer in Oklahoma for $125!). You'll find SiliconValley Classifieds at
http://www.classifieds2000.com/cgi- cls/display.exe?geocities+computer+class and MotorCity Classifieds at http://www.classifieds2000.com/cgi- cls/display.exe?geocities+auto+class.

The best thing about both these services is the "Cool Notify" feature. Just tell us exactly what you're looking for, right down to the price you'll pay, and we'll e-mail you as soon as the exact item you're looking for is on the market. How's that for easy at-home shopping?

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY

-- Reminder: We will NEVER ask you for your password. (We don't have to. We have magic powers and access to the master database.) Anyone who sends you e-mail claiming to be us and wanting your member information is a fake, and breaking our rules besides. If you see anyone soliciting member names and passwords, send their message or URL directly to
alert@geocities.com , and we'll go after them.

-- Thousands of people have already updated their online profiles so that we can help Web surfers around the net find them. If you haven't done it yet, take a moment at http://www.geocities.com/companies/profile.html to choose topics and geographical markers for your page. Let us bring the world to your doorstep!

-- What do you consider the best books in the world? Submit your picks to the Great Books Search, an ambitious project that's compiling a list of the greatest books worldwide. See http://www.geocities.com/Athens/4863/ to vote and see the current list of the top 100 books.

-- Now there's a special club for our youngest GeoCitizens: it's the GeoKidz club, founded by one of our most devoted Community Leaders. If you're a kid and want to join other young GeoCities members for games, contests and more, sign up at http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/3696/. (Parents, get your kids involved!)

-- We're growing so fast that we've been adding new suburbs and neighborhoods left and right. Let's see, what's new since the last issue? There's ResearchTriangle, a second technology neighborhood for the cutting-edge thinkers among us. Plus we've added CapitolHill/Lobby, Heartland/Hills (a special request from the Heartland Community Leaders!), MotorCity/Downs, TimesSquare/Alley and WestHollywood/Heights. The more we grow, the more new areas we'll add. In coming weeks, look for ThePentagon (a military neighborhood), Nashville (country music) and Baja (adventure travel, offroading and the SUV life).

-- Don't forget to check out http://www.geocities.com/Utilities/features.html for information on all the neat things you can add to your pages, including counters, guestbooks, maps and more.
