GeoCities Operations Team

04 April - 20:10 PST (-08:00 GMT)

All neighborhoods are back up and running and GeoCities has resumed full operations. Here is some background on the situation. GeoCities stores all data for homesteader pages on high capacity disks (RAIDS). We are currently in the process of balancing the load across numerous RAIDS, which in some cases means certain neighborhoods are unavailable for a period of time while they are moved from one RAID to another.

Additionally, and this was a problem we ran into today, we experience hardware and or software failures that are either related or unrelated to the moving of the neighborhoods. In any case, we had our share of hardware and software problems today, in the midst of moving neighborhoods, no less, and in the midst of installing additional equipment. Needless to say, a lot of very hard working and very dedicated people here at GeoCities have gotten little or no sleep during the past week.

We've also had a problem with moving some files into homesteader directories in the Yosemite neighborhood that didn't belong there.

As always, we will try our best to minimize any interruption in service, and also keep this announcements page up to date. Your support and patience is appreciated as we continuously try to improve and upgrade our systems.

GeoCities Operations Team

04 April - 09:57 PST (-08:00 GMT)

The following neighborhoods: BourbonStreet, CapeCanaveral, Hollywood, SoHo, SouthBeach, TelevisionCity, TheTropics and WallStreet are temporarily unavailable due to a system problem. We are doing our best to get the system back up as soon as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our homesteaders.

GeoCities Operations Team

4 April - 5:50 PST (-08:00 GMT)

Our neighborhoods were unavailable for approximately one hour this morning due to a system problem. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our homesteaders and the system is back up.

GeoCities Operations Team

3 April - 8:01 PST (-08:00 GMT)

Most of the main neighborhoods are once again intact and having no difficulty, but some of their suburbs remain without a home. Most of this will be cleared up this morning, as soon as our hardware vendor delivers the necessary equipment to make the repairs.

We appreciate your patience.

GeoCities Operations Team

2 April - 21:40 PST (-08:00 GMT)

One of the file servers has decided not to respond again, so we're in the process of replacing most of the internal components to improve its performance. This means that several of the neighborhoods will be unavailable for the next several hours.

Those neighborhoods effected include Vienna, BourbonStreet, CapeCanaveral, EnchantedForest, Hollywood, SoHo, SouthBeach, TelevisionCity, TheTropics, and WallStreet.

We truly apologize for yet another inconvenience, but are working through the night to make repairs.

GeoCities Operations Team

2 April - 03:00 PST (-08:00 GMT)

The neighborhoods are back up. Thank you for your patience.

GeoCities Operations

1 April - 23:07 PST (-08:00 GMT)

One of our file servers just went down again, so that means that some of the neighborhoods will (once again) be unavailable until we can bring it back up. Know that we're working as hard as we can, as long as we must, to make things right. I'll keep you updated as I know more.
April Fool's Day just couldn't pass us by without a hitch.

Kevin at GeoCities

1 April - 13:50 PST (-08:00 GMT)

The last several days have been quite frustrating for us here at GeoCities as well as for our users, and we apologize. We are continually in the process of installing additional hardware and software to keep up with the demand, and even the best laid plans sometimes run into trouble.

We have suffered from a series of unplanned outages during the past several days, starting late last Thursday, and continuing through today. These outages have several causes, including unexpected hardware incompatibility, delays in moving data from one file system to another, and general 'Murphy's Law'

We are ALWAYS adding additional capacity to GeoCities, and we take great pains to avoid any disruptions to our homesteaders, visitors and customers. We will be working day and night to resolve these problems, and again apologize for any inconvenience.

GeoCities Operations Management

31 March - 11:05 PST (-08:00 GMT)
