We are experiencing intermittent network outages on our mail system, usually lasting anywhere from 1-3 minutes each, due to a problem with one of our providers. They are aware of the problem and are working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation

Until they are able to find a solution, you may experience occasional "The mail server is not responding..." error messages when you attempt to retrieve your GeoCities email. We ask that you please be patient and try again.

Aside from that, no oth r outages have been reported.

We are still experiencing some intermittent network outages (on the mail subsystem) as a result of the problem described earlier, but it should be much better now. We will continue to monitor all of the systems throughout the night and all day tomorrow, nd we will post more updates here as they become available.

Also, we experienced some minor problems with the new Java chat servers earlier, we believe these have been taken care of. We'll also be keeping a close eye on those systems as well.

Message from David:

During the past week or so we have been working hard to migrate to a more advanced database system within GeoCities. The strong growth of GeoCities means we are always adding additional equipment, upgrading our software, and improving our systems.

The upgrade to a new database is not yet complete, and will continue during the next several days. During this period, there will be times when some features of GeoCities may be disabled or unavailable entirely.

We will do everything we can to minimize the disruption to our homesteaders and visitors. Some of our testing must be done, however, during the peak hours between 11:00 AM PDT and 7:00 PM PDT.

Homesteaders may find that the File Manager and other utilities are more readily available during off-peak hours during the next several days.

The success of GeoCities is dependent of maintaining a stable, fast and reliable environment. We understand also that the success of GeoCities depends on maintaining the trust and confidence of our members. We are working double shifts, 24 hours a day to complete this upgrade as soon as possible. Please check back on this page for information and further updates.

Once again, we'll have intermittent outages of most member utilities while we troubleshoot these database problems we're seeing. While we know how frustrating this can be to our homesteaders, it's necessary for us to make these upgrades so that we will be able to handle increasing traffic even faster than before.
