Software Download

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I figure out which product to download?

The best way to figure out which product is best for you is to read the short product descriptions found by clicking the product name on the Overview of Products page. If you want additional information, choose one of the links beneath the Get Software button. It indicates for which platforms and in which languages each product is available, what its system requirements are, and how much it costs.

How long will it take to download a product?

Download times vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection and the number of other people trying to download software at the same time. For an estimate of download times with a 28.8 Kbps modem, choose the Download Specs link next to each product description on the Overview of Products page.

How much hard disk space or memory do I need for downloading a product?

The requirement varies from product to product. For information about memory and hard disk requirements for a product, choose the Download Specs link next to each product description on the Overview of Products page.

Is the software I download for free the same as the software I would buy in the Netscape Store?

Yes - the software is the same. But when you purchase software, you have the legal right to continue using it after the evaluation period, and you have access to documentation and continued support.

What is the difference between products identified as preview releases and products with version numbers only?

Preview releases are early versions of software that Netscape makes available for you to try before it is complete and bug-free. An important difference between preview releases and finished software is that preview software will expire after a certain time. Netscape does this to discourage you from using old products that may contain bugs.

If I download finished software for free, will it expire after the evaluation period?

No. Finished software releases don't stop working when the evaluation period ends. Netscape relies on the honor system: If you continue to use the software after the evaluation period, we ask that you pay for a license.

I have evaluated the software I downloaded and would now like to purchase a license. Do I have to download the product again?

No. The product you download to evaluate is the same product you would buy in the Netscape Store, so you don't need to get a new copy. The easiest way to pay for a license is to visit the Store, select the product you are using, and buy it. When the opportunity to download comes, simply ignore that step.

Do I get any free technical support?

Yes. Netscape's comprehensive Technical Support site is available to you free both while you evaluate software and when you purchase it. The site contains a wealth of information, such as timely articles, newsgroups, a search engine, and technical notes. You will find many answers here, and you can visit the site anytime you need it, 24 hours a day. In addition, for any client, server, or tool product you purchase, you are entitled to 90 days of installation assistance from the date of purchase.

Can I purchase additional technical support?

Check out Netscape's Technical Support Programs page for more information on the available programs, including answers to frequently asked questions and instructions on purchasing a support agreement.
