Software Download

How to Install

This page provides detailed instructions on how to install Netscape's browser suites on Windows and Macintosh platforms.

Server installation is more complicated. If you're downloading server software, please read the read-me file that accompanies the downloaded software.

Windows Users

  1. Before you download your Netscape product, be sure to note the directory to which you are downloading the software. The default directory contains the version of the Netscape product you are currently running - and you should not download your new product into this directory. Download it into a different directory.

  2. The Setup program asks you to indicate the target directory for the installation. If you want to use existing bookmarks, preferences, and settings, you can install Netscape Navigator or Communicator into the directory containing your current Navigator - but make sure your current Navigator is closed. The 16-bit version of Netscape Navigator will ask if you want to continue using your existing netscape.ini file. You should agree to do so if you want to continue using existing bookmarks and preferences; otherwise the netscape.ini file will be overwritten and existing settings will be lost.

  3. After you have answered all the questions in the installation process, you will be taken to the registration page to register your Netscape software so you can take advantage of the many programs that Netscape offers, including automatic upgrades and email notification about new software.

Macintosh Users

  1. Before you download your Netscape product, be sure to note the folder to which you are downloading the software. The default location is your Macintosh desktop. Do not download your new product into the same directory as your current product. You can change the default download location by opening the Options menu, selecting General Preferences and then Applications, and using the Browse button to change the downloads directory.

  2. The compressed file that you download extracts automatically. The installer appears in your target folder.

  3. Double-click the installer icon. The installer prompts you for an installation folder. The default folder is called Netscape. If you install your new software into the Netscape folder that contains your current version of the product, your old version will be overwritten, but you can still use your existing bookmarks, preferences, and settings.
