00041: Why do I get the message
Preset disk cache folder not found?
revision date: 07/29/97
Navigator's cache is a collection of automatically-generated temporary files which are intended to reduce redundant downloads. This message indicates that Navigator did not find the cache folder ("directory") where it was expected. You will need to set your cache directory.
00042: Why do I get the message
Server has no DNS entry?
revision date: 07/29/97
A DNS entry allows MindSpring's servers to convert text-based addresses into IP addresses (e.g., www.mindspring.com = 204.180.128.20). The intention of this message is to inform you that the server you have attempted to contact has no registered name. However, there are two alternate explanations: 1) the URL is incorrect or 2) Navigator is unable to communicate with our domain name servers.
If you entered the URL yourself, ensure that the address you typed is correct. If you received the message when attempting to follow a link from a Web page, it is possible that the link is incorrect; however, it is also possible that there is a communication problem.
Determine the status of your Internet connection by clearing your disk cache (see Tips: How to Clear the Disk Cache) then loading the MindSpring home page (http://www.mindspring.com). If the page loads after clearing the cache, you can be certain that your connection is active, and you should be able to resolve any address.
00043: Why do I get the message
Unable to locate host?
revision date: 07/29/97
The host referred to is the server where the file requested resides. Unlike the DNS entry error, this message indicates that Navigator has identified that the server exists, but that it is currently unable to contact it. Assuming that you established an Internet connection before launching Navigator, this server may be temporarily offline, or may be too busy to respond to your request. Try again later.
An alternate explanation for this message is that you are requesting an update of a document that Navigator has cached (it has therefore previously identified the server), and you are not currently connected to MindSpring.
00044: Why do I get the message
Connection refused by host?
revision date: 07/29/97
In this instance, Navigator was able to contact the host, but was refused service. You may have more success later. In most cases, a server which contains freely distributed material refuses a connection only when it has reached its capacity.
00045: Why does Navigator run so
slowly?
revision date: 07/29/97
Good question. If Navigator is running slowly, the lag could be in one of three areas: 1) the server from which you are retrieving files 2) your system, or 3) your connection. The trick is to determine which of these is the culprit. Before proceeding, clear the cache (see 00283: How to Set the Cache Directory ). If performance does not improve after cache, please continue.
Every time you click on an item located on a web page, you are requesting a file from a particular server. The rate at which this server can transfer the file is affected by its current workload, among other things. Try opening a link to another server. Several links can be found at the following URL:
If pages located on other servers load more quickly, then the lag is not caused by your connection or your system, but by the server where requested file resides. Try again at an off-peak hour.
Try switching to the Finder. Open and close folders; empty the trash. If these procedures appear to be affected, the problem is likely within your system. Test Navigator's response after each of the following steps.
- Close all other applications.
- Restart your computer.
- Try increasing the amount of memory available to Navigator. (With Navigator closed, select its program icon in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu.)
- Reduce the amount of Virtual Memory used. (In a tight memory situation, where your computer is forced to rely heavily on Virtual Memory, performance can be degraded significantly.)
- Reduce the number of connections (This may increase performance by reducing Navigator's workload.) (see 00558: How to Set the Number of Connections).
One of the most difficult tasks in modem-based communication is establishing a stable, high-speed connection. Fortunately, MindSpring's Technical Support personnel are highly skilled at this task, and can assist you in isolating the cause of any connection difficulty you may be experiencing. Because so many factors can affect the quality of your connection, a telephone call to MindSpring Technical Support may be in order (800)719-4660 or (404)815-9111.
00206: Connectix Corporation's
Speed Doubler
revision date: 07/29/97
Netscape Communications reports that a bug in Connectix Corp.'s Speed Doubler may cause b-tree corruption when used in conjunction with Netscape Navigator v. 2.0. An upgrade to version 1.1 of Speed Doubler should eliminate this problem.
00207: Open Transport for the
Macintosh
revision date: 07/29/97
Early versions of Open Transport experienced conflicts with Netscape Navigator 2.0. Version 1.1 of Open Transport, initially released with System Software 7.5.3, eliminates these conflicts.

00284: How to Clear the Disk Cache
Revision Date:
07/29/97
Navigator's disk cache is a collection of automatically-generated temporary files which are intended to reduce redundant downloads. The disk cache can comprise hundreds of documents, and is thus the source of frequent problems. Clear the cache periodically to eliminate any errors, or to improve Navigator's performance.
If you are using then do this Navigator 2.x Select Network Preferences from the Options menu, and then click Connections. Navigator 1.12 Select Preferences from the Options menu, and then select Cache and Network. Navigator 1.0 Select Preferences from the Options menu, and then select Directories, Applications and News from the drop-down menu.
Click Clear Disk Cache Now.
00285: How to Set the Number of Connections
Revision Date:
07/29/97
Navigator is able to download several files simultaneously by opening multiple network connections. This allows you, for instance, to see two images load at once. While this feature can make the delivery of web pages seem more immediate, it can also strain your modem connection. If your connection does not appear to be optimal, or if you are using a 14.4 modem, you may wish to reduce the number of connections.
Change the Connections to 1 (the default is 4).
00286: How to Use Multiple Web
Browser Windows
Revision Date:
07/29/97
If you have ever found yourself tapping your foot while a Web server takes its time delivering your 10k file, you will appreciate this tip. You can have two or more Navigator Web Browsers active simultaneously. Next time you find yourself waiting on a page to load, choose New Web Browser from the File menu, and you may view other pages while the first page is loading. You can switch between Browsers at will using the Windows menu. (Note: Connections must equal one per active window.)
00287: How to Configure Navigator
to Decode Binhex4 (.hqx) Files
Revision Date:
07/29/97
Current versions of Netscape Navigator for the Mac include a Stuffit Expander Installer (see t0094: Stuffit Expander for the Mac) which, after installed can decode BinHex files. If you have an older version of Navigator, or no longer have Stuffit Expander, you can configure Navigator to decode BinHex.
Select General Preferences from Netscape Navigator's Options menu.
Select the Helpers tab.
Scroll through the list of helper applications until you see hqx in the Extensions column. Select that row.
Choose Use Netscape as Viewer from the selections below the helpers list.
Click OK.
00288: Drag and Drop (version 2.0
or greater)
Revision Date:
07/29/97
If you are using System Software 7.5 or later, you can save a file to disk by dragging the file's link to the desktop and dropping it. Once the download is complete, you will find the file right where you dropped it.
00289: Super Reload (version 3.0
only)
Revision Date:
07/29/97
Ordinarily, if you wish to view a more recent version of a web page, clicking the Reload button will suffice. However, if you suspect that the reloaded version is not truly current, hold down the OPTION key and then press Reload. This will force Navigator to download the page even though it thinks it is showing you the most recent version.
