t0091: Fetch for the Mac OS

00054: How do I find out more about Fetch?
revision date: 07/29/97

Fetch has an excellent built-in help program including a tutorial that can be accessed by clicking on the ? menu while Fetch is open.

00055: What is FTP?
revision date: 07/29/97

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol, a method of... you guessed it: transferring files. Using Fetch, an FTP client, you can copy files from a remote server to your disk, or from your disk to the server. Using Fetch to manage your personal Web and FTP space, you can create, delete and rename files and directories, and determine privileges for them.

00056: I have created a home page for my WWW site. How do I make it available on the Web?
revision date: 07/29/97

If your MindSpring plan includes personal Web and FTP space, you will want to upload your html document, and accompanying files, to your home directory on MindSpring's Web server. (see 00265: How to make your HTML documents available on the Worldwide Web)

00265: How to make your HTML documents available on the Worldwide Web
revision date: 07/29/97

  1. Open a connection to ftp.mindspring.com or ftp.pipeline.com using your own mailbox name and password. (See 00262: How to Open a Connection to MindSpring's FTP site)

  2. Double-click the www directory.

  3. Click Put File. An Open dialog box appears.

  4. Use the Open dialog box to select the file you wish to upload, then click Open.

  5. Using the dialog box that appears, name the file.Use lower-case letters whenever possible.Use no spaces.Use the extensions:
    html for html documents
    gif for GIF images
    jpeg for JPEG images
    txt for plain text documents.

  6. Choose the file type. Use raw data for all browser-viewable formats (such as those mentioned in step 5).

  7. Click OK.The little dog starts running, and Fetch commences uploading.

To view the Web files you have uploaded

Point your browser to the following URL:

http://www.domain.com/~mailboxname/filename

where domain is mindspring or pipeline mailboxname is replaced by your mailbox name (don't forget the tilde ~), and filename is replaced by the name of the file you wish to view.

00057: What is “anonymous FTP?”
revision date: 07/29/97

Many FTP hosts have files which have been made available to the general public. To access the files on these hosts, you must use the user ID anonymous and your email address as the password. Connecting in this manner is known as “anonymous FTP.”

00058: What is My Home Directory
revision date: 07/29/97

You may place files directly in your home directory; however, no one will be able to access these except yourself. The ftp and www directories are accessible to others to read, but they may not delete or alter any files on those directories. The ftp directory is accessible by using an FTP client, such as Anarchie, or by a World Wide Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator. The address for your ftp directory is

ftp.domain.com/users/mailboxname

where domain is mindspring or pipeline and mailboxname is replaced by your MindSpring mailbox name. Your www directory is publicly accessible only by using a Web browser. The URL for your www directory is

http://www.domain.com/~mailboxname

or

http://home.mailboxname.domain.com

where domain is mindspring or pipeline and mailboxname is replaced by your mailbox name.

00059: Why do I get error -3221 or -3264?
revision date: 07/29/97

The origin of these errors is within Open Transport - most likely an early version. Open Transport 1.1 solves many of the problems inherent in early releases, and can be obtained from Apple Computer, Inc.

00060: I have a 14,400 bps modem, but I only get 1000 bytes/second.
revision date: 07/29/97

In general, download throughput is affected by two things: the quality of your connection, and the responsiveness of the remote server, that is, the computer which holds the files you wish to download. To determine whether the server is slow in responding, try an alternate server, or try the same server at an off hour. If, regardless of the remote server used, your transfer rate (in bytes/second) is less than 7% of your modem's optimum speed (in bits/second), you may be having connection difficulty. A call to MindSpring Technical Support may be in order.

00061: Why do I get the message “This is not a proper MacBinary II file.”
revision date: 07/29/97

This message, and others about MacBinary I, AppleSingle, StuffIt! and MacHost format files, means that the file has been corrupted in some way. Try to download the file again. If the problem persists, you may wish to contact the source of the file for assistance.

  1. Open Fetch. The Open Connection window appears.

  2. In the Host field, type ftp.mindspring.com or ftp.pipeline.com

  3. In the User ID field, type your mailbox name or anonymous. If you use anonymous, you will not be able to enter your personal FTP space.

  6. Click OK.

00263: How to Check your Disk Space Usage
revision date: 07/29/97

Knowing how much of your allotted disk space you have used is now as easy as reading the welcome message which appears at connection. To read this message, position the ftp window so that the ftp messages window is visible. You should see statistics which resemble the following:

Your disk quota is: 10.00 megabytes
Your disk usage is:

Home/WWW 2.00 megabytes
FTP: 3.00 megabytes
Total: 5.00 megabytes (50% of quota)

Of course, the most important line of this report is the last - the total. If Your disk quota is 10.00 megabytes, you will now be strictly limited to that Total.

00264: How to Navigate MindSpring's FTP site
revision date: 07/29/97

MindSpring's FTP site is configured so that, if you connect using your mailbox name and password, you will automatically be placed in your home directory. From this position, you may change to your ftp or www directories by double-clicking the appropriate directory name. From your www directory, you may change back to your home directory by selecting your mailbox name from the drop-down menu which is above the directory window (it should read www). Once you are within your ftp directory, however, re-entering your home directory is a two-step procedure.

To return to your home directory from your ftp directory

  1. Select / (that's a single forward slash) from the drop-down menu above your directory listing. From this location, you should see three directories: your own home directory (indicated by the primary mailbox name), the pub or public directory, and the users directory.

  2. Double-click your home directory.

00266: How to create an Incoming directory
revision date: 07/29/97

For others to be able to upload files to your ftp directory, you must create a subdirectory, and assign it universal write privileges. This will allow anonymous uploads to this directory.

To create an incoming directory

  1. Open a connection to ftp.mindspring.com or ftp.pipeline.com using your own mailbox name and password. See 00262: How to Open a Connection to MindSpring's FTP site

  2. Double-click the ftp directory.

  3. Select Create New Directory from the Directories menu.

  4. Type incoming and click OK.

  5. Select the incoming directory.

  6. Select send FTP Command from the Remote menu.

  7. Type site chmod 1777 incoming and click OK.

The path to your new directory is now ftp.domain.com/users/mailboxname/
incoming/
where domain is mindspring or pipeline , and mailboxname is replaced by your mailbox name.

00267: How to Create a Shortcut
revision date: 07/29/97

You may have noticed, when opening a new connection, a Shortcut drop-down list with several pre-defined FTP sites. Your own favorite sites can be added to this list, saving you the trouble of entering connecting information for each visit.

To create a Shortcut

  1. Select Add Shortcut from the Customize window. If the Open Connection dialog box is up, you can click Cancel or establish a connection.

  2. Type in the settings for the Shortcut you wish to create.

  3. Click OK.
