A bargain for you may be no bargain for me. You want the cheapest email address; I'm after server space for cents per megabyte. It's too much to ask that we all agree on the best discount ISP. Even so, though all of the ISPs here have something to offer somebody, one provider offers the best deal: MindSpring. (MindSpring is a distributor of CNET's Snap Online service.) MindSpring scores high across the board, with a $6.95-per-month price for 5 hours of access, 5MB of free Web hosting space, 33.6-kbps and 56-kbps modems scattered across a U.S.-wide network, first-rate technical support, and an innovative approach to content display. Overall, MindSpring delivers more for your money than any other ISP in this review. But MindSpring is not the best choice for everyone. Other ISPs--such as AT&T; WorldNet and the Microsoft Network (MSN)--come in a close second. These services earned average scores in one of our four crucial areas, and both have at least one deficiency, such as MSN's lackluster services and WorldNet's fewer free hours for those not using AT&T; to dial long distance. Also, depending on your needs, even some of our lower-ranked ISPs could be your best bet: America Online and IBM Internet Connection, for instance, offer multiple email addresses, and Sprint Internet Passport gives you the cheapest mailbox around.
