FAQ -- Sponsorship Banners on your Home Page
Here are the answers to frequently asked questions about which types of banners are
allowed in GeoCities. For complete content guideline information, please visit our
Page Content Guidelines and Member Terms of Service Page.
- What do you mean by "sponsorship banner"?
- A sponsorship banner is any graphic image on your home page for which you
receive reimbursement of any kind. Reimbursement can include money, prizes,
sweepstakes entries, rewards, banner swaps, hits, material goods, etc.
- What kinds of sponsorship banners are allowed on my GeoCities home page?
- There are two approved sponsorship banners for GeoCities home pages:
GeoGuide Banner Exchange and
Link Exchange.
These are the only two banner programs we allow at this time. All other
sponsorship banners are a violation of our content guidelines.
- Does that mean I can't put any graphics for any commercial company on my
home page?
- No. Any graphic that you put up on your own, without anyone asking you to,
is okay. For example, if you use Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet
Explorer, and you want to display a graphic button to tell your viewers
which browser you use, that's fine.
However, if someone asks you to put a banner or graphic on your page in
exchange for compensation or a specific reward, that's against the rules.
- Hey, these are my pages, right? Why can't I put whatever banners
I want on them?
- GeoCities is a free home page service, and our main source of revenue is
commercial advertising. Our advertisers are the ones who are paying for all
the free disk space and utilities we provide to our members. Outside
sponsorship banners on GeoCities home pages make our paying sponsors' ads
less effective -- and that makes it harder for us to attract sponsors. The
fewer sponsors we have, the fewer free home pages and utilities we can give
out.
We ask you to follow our guidelines so that together we can continue to
create the biggest and best community on the Web.
- I still don't get it. Can you give me some examples of the banners
that aren't allowed here?
- There are lots of banner exchange programs out there. Some of the most
common are PageCount, BannerAd, WebPromote and Commonwealth, but there are
more. Just remember the golden rule: If you get any kind of reward,
reimbursement or compentation for putting a banner on your page, and it's
not one of our approved banner programs, it's a violation of our guidelines.
- If I win an award, can I put their graphic on my page?
- Yes.
- All I want to do is bring more traffic to my site. How can I promote my
home page?
- One of our primary goals is getting people to your home page, so we've got
several great programs to help you promote your site.
First, make sure your home page meets our Content Guidelines. Then, apply
for one or more of the following programs:
* GEOGUIDE BANNER EXCHANGE. Through our GeoGuide Banner Exchange, a banner promoting your site
appears on the pages of other GeoCitizens, and you earn sweepstakes tickets
and points for drawing traffic to your site. You'll find the details at
http:/www.geocities.com/members/tools/banner_submit.html . If you become a member of
GeoPlus,
then those tickets and points are worth more and increase your chances of
winning great prizes.
* FEATURED PAGE PROGRAM. Through this program, our Community Leaders and
editors choose and highlight the best sites at GeoCities. If your page is
chosen as one of our Featured Pages, you'll likely get more exposure than
any outside service could provide. See
http://www.geocities.com/join/featured_pages.html for details.
* LINK EXCHANGE. We've made a special arrangement with
Link Exchange for GeoCities members who want to promote them sites all over
the Web. See http://geocities.linkexchange.com/geojoin/ for directions.
