    1. Q: What are the rules of chat?
      A: We have some basic rules:
        no offensive names;
        no sexually explicit or offensive material;
        no swear words and racial slurs;
        no repeat postings or flooding; and
        harassing or abusive behavior will not be tolerated.

      Please view the complete list of GeoCities Chat Guidelines.

    2. Q: Why do we need rules?
      A: The guidelines ensure that all chatters have a clean and healthy environment where they can meet and chat with other users, free from harassment and vulgar content.

    3. Q: How do I post images?
      A: To post an image, simply type in two backslashes and the name of the image you wish to post. For example, to post a picture of a rose, you would type //rose and an image of a rose would appear. Images can be posted either publicly or in private messages. To see a list of all the available images for posting click on the Images button on the bottom of your chat window when in JavaLight or click on Options and then Images when using the HTML chat.

    4. Q: What is 'flooding'?
      A: Flooding occurs when a chat user sends multiple rapid messages to the chat server, causing a disruption in the normal delivery of the GeoCities chat service. The server will automatically boot an offender from the room if the chatter posts five or more posts in a very short period of time.

    5. Q: What does a chat monitor do?
      A: A chat monitor's (CM's) role is to help nurture a pleasant, stimulating and provocative environment where people from all over the world can meet and interact. GeoCities CMs play an instrumental role in helping to foster and maintain our community. A CM has the ability to "boot" offensive users from the chatroom they are appointed to monitor.

    6. Q: How can I become a chat monitor?
      A: To learn more on the role of CMs and find out how to become one, view the Chat Monitor Information page.

    7. Q: How do I create a private room?
      A:
      1. Click on the rooms button on the bottom of your chat window
      2. Click on Create Room in the pop up window.
      3. Type in the name of the room you wish to create and then select whether you wish the room to be private or public.

    8. Q: What is the difference between a user-created public room and a private room?
      A:
      1. Public user-created rooms will be visible on the User-Created Rooms list.
      2. Private rooms can only be entered if the name of the user knows the name of the room.

    9. Q: How do I ignore someone?
      A:
      1. Double-click on a user's post in the chat window.
      2. Double-click on a user's name in the user list on the right-hand side of the screen.
      3. Select a user's name in the right hand user list (single-click to highlight it) and then click on User Options on the bottom right side below the user list.

        Each of these three options will bring up a separate pop-up window. Click on the Ignore User box. You will not see any posts, either public or private, from that user. If that user tries to send you a private message they will see that their message has been ignored. The names of the users you place on ignore will show up in italics, on the user list on the right side of your screen.

    10. Q: How do I find my friend?
      A: Click on the All Users button on the bottom of your chat window. A seperate pop up window will appear. Find the name of the user you wish to find from the list and then click on Go To Room.
