What we have here is an ugly market. People are hearing bad news and taking it hook, line, and sinker, while good news rolls off people's backs like water off a duck. It is the polar opposite from last year at this time. Then we were a Prozac market, now we're all on Quaaludes. We're just plain down. Cheap Tickets Loses CFO After the bell yesterday, Cheap Tickets (Nasdaq: CTIX - news) announced it would be losing CFO Dale Jorgenson. The discount travel products seller said Jorgenson would resign in February to spend more time with his family. Shares of Cheap Tickets hit a 52-week low ahead of the announcement, closing at $7.16. The stock traded above $19 last December. Collected Takes on the "Slowdown" With the Nasdaq and technology shares suffering, Fools everywhere are feeling the pain. We weighed in with a special section yesterday, but we're not the only folks with insight and opinions. In this feature, we've gathered up a few interesting bits of commentary from around the Web. We'll start off with a timeless classic from Warren Buffett. Fool Plate Special: Gateway in the Post-PC World As everyone knows by now, PC maker Gateway (NYSE: GTW - news) warned that it expects to lose money this quarter, with revenues coming in $500 million below its earlier estimates. The company is blaming consumer PC sales that will lack ho-ho-ho this holiday season, and says that such trends will continue into next year, and on into the year after that. Daily Double: Carreker: Worth a Double-Take? Carreker Corp. Wind River Sets Sail Embedded software provider Wind River Systems (Nasdaq: WIND - news) reported positive results after the market's close yesterday, highlighted by strong top-line growth and an improved operating margin. Though the stock fell roughly 10% prior to the announcement, while trading relatively flat today, the long-term potential for this company looks good as it boasts dominant market share in the embedded operating systems space. Competition, however, remains an uncertainty. (NYSE: GPS - news), American Eagle (Nasdaq: AEOS - news), and Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF - news) all reported November sales results yesterday or today. American Eagle, which has been on fire compared to the other two for most of this year, had incredibly strong results. Gap's sales were better than expected, and Abercrombie's were worse than had been anticipated. (I own shares of both Abercrombie and Gap.) Fool on the Hill: Is Investing Success Just Luck? We spend a lot of time talking about competitive advantages and quality businesses, which is another way of saying we think the average investor, with diligence and patience, can become a pretty good stock picker. Fool Plate Special: deCODE genetics' New Gene Move Yet another biotech genomics company is moving into the competitive "what-do-genes mean" space. Iceland-based deCODE genetics (Nasdaq: DCGN - news) announced formation of a pharmacogenomics unit to use gene expression data to better predict drug effect and response. It's a good thing deCODE scored $200 million in its July IPO because it will need a cash cushion for its self-proclaimed "strategic blitz" into pharmacogenomics and a new cancer unit. deCODE closed yesterday down $2.69 to $12.94, well off a $31.50 high reached one month after its IPO.
