IBM Shares Plunge on Slack Sales International Business Machines Corp. on Wednesday plunged, helping to knock down the Dow Jones industrial average, after third quarter sales fell short of analyst's expectations and the world's largest computer maker scaled back its fourth quarter outlook. More Auto Suppliers Post Weak Earnings Two more U.S. auto parts makers reported disappointing third quarter earnings on Wednesday as the Firestone tire recall, soft North American markets and other factors eroded profits in the sector. Sun Microsystems Net Rises 85 Percent Sun Microsystems Inc., the biggest maker of computers that serve up Web pages, on Wednesday said fiscal first-quarter share earnings rose 88 percent as sales soared 60 percent, sending its shares rocketing before trading was halted after the earnings were mistakenly posted on its Web site. Time Warner Net Falls, Beats Estimates Media and entertainment giant Time Warner Inc. on Wednesday reported a sharp fall in third-quarter net earnings, but its operating profits beat analysts' estimates and the company offered an upbeat outlook. Kodak Earnings Exceed Revised Expectations Eastman Kodak Co. on Wednesday reported third-quarter earnings that exceeded lowered analysts' estimates, but sales were flat amid weaker demand for film across the industry. Boeing Profits Beats Wall Street Forecast Boeing Co. said on Wednesday profits rose 30 percent in the third quarter, beating Wall Street forecasts, as the aerospace giant squeezed more cash out of its businesses even as revenues shrank. Chase Manhattan Profits Down 26 Percent Chase Manhattan Corp., the No. 3 U.S. bank holding company, on Wednesday said its profits slumped 26 percent in the third quarter, sharply below Wall Street estimates, after investment losses, sluggish trading revenues and higher costs. Sliding Treasury Yields Risk of Slump The Federal Reserve may be stressing inflation risks, but the U.S. Treasury market fired a warning shot across the Fed's bow on Wednesday: tumbling stocks threaten to turn a gradual economic slowdown into a deeper and more dangerous slump. |
