What is the Index?

The Women of Playboy Index is the result of a project I started sometime in 1994, in an effort to catalogue my extensive collection of Playboy magazine back issues. It was a labor motivated initially by my frustration at not being able to locate a particular model or pictorial that I knew I had seen in one of my issues, but was unable to locate among the several hundred issues in my collection. The more I worked on it, the more it occurred to me that other collectors might be interested in such a reference, as would non-collectors who were trying to track down one or more issues featuring a particular model. So, when I finished it, I decided to make it available to others over the Internet.

The first version of the Index (complete back through 1970) was posted to Usenet in July of 1995. The feedback was entirely positive, so I continued to work on it, gradually piecing together my collection of late-1960's issues, and updating with each new monthly issue I received. Some individuals received copies of the work-in-progress via e-mail, but I decided to abandon my plan to post new versions over Usenet. Instead I present it here on the Web, where such things belong, in a much more user-friendly format, completely cross-platform, taking up no disk space on your machine, immune to accidental deletion or corruption, downloads in next to no time, and frequently updated for your convenience, free of charge. My pleasure.

This index is for you if you have ever done any of the following:

What is included

The Index lists every woman who made a credited photo appearance in Playboy magazine (U.S. edition) from the January 1967 issue to the present time. Every Playmate, every celebrity, every Bunny, every coed from the college pictorials, is listed here in complete detail, provided the name of the model was given in the text of the magazine.

What is not included

How to use the Index

Each letter of the alphabet is given a separate page. You can use the set of links at the top of this page to go to whatever page you like. A similar set of links will be found at the top of each page of the Index. You can locate a particular name on the page by scrolling down or by using the "Search" or "Find" function of your browser.

Entries are in alphabetical order, last name first. All names are in absolute alphabetical order; there are no separate sections for names beginning with "Mc," "Mac," "O'," "Van," etc.

The first column is the model's name. The second column tells what issue she appeared in (month/year) and the page number on which she appeared (or first appeared), then the title of the article. For example:

6/73(47): Women of the Gamma Quadrant

means that the model in question appeared in the June 1973 issue on page 47 (or in a pictorial beginning on page 47) in an article entitled "Women of the Gamma Quadrant".

Beginning in mid-2009, Playboy went to a 10-issues-per-year schedule, combining the July and August issues into one, and the January and February issues into one. These issues are listed with the abbreviations "Sum" (for Summer issue) and "Win" (for Winter issue). So, the July/August 2009 issue listed as "Sum/09" and the January/February 2010 issue is listed as "Win/10".

The last column is a code which indicates what the lady in question is showing in her appearance. The code letters are:

N = Nipples;
B = Buttocks;
L = Legs;
P = Pubic area.

So, the code NLP would indicate full-frontal nudity, while L would mean she's in a skirt or shorts or something. Silly, I know, but I haven't really been able to think of a system that's as descriptive while remaining at least reasonably intuitive.

An asterisk (*) means she's not showing any of the above. She may be fully clothed, or she may be nude or semi-nude and covering up.

All Playmates (since 1967) are listed in CAPS. The titles of their centerfold pictorials are also listed in caps for easier reference.

Plans for the future

My "things to do" list for this site includes:

Yes, I know these "plans" have been on hold for quite a while now, but rest assured that I still intend to act on them.

Other resources

Here are some other good Playboy-related resources:

1. Playboy's own World Wide Web site, which includes such things as excerpts from the latest issue, pictures of recent Playmates (including some nudes), an online shopping catalogue, and more. You'll be able to find info here on Playboy's Cyber Club, a members-only pay site that offers numerous exclusive features (including pictures).

2. The Playboy Mailing List. Formerly an e-mail list, and still called "The Playboy Mailing List," this community is now a Yahoo group. For the past ten years, this has been the main online forum for text-only, spam-free discussion of Playboy. It is not affiliated with Playboy Enterprises. (Free) membership is required.

3. List member Dominique Léger has put together a PML Resources Page with a lot of info and links for list members, or anyone interested in Playboy.

4. The Playboy Book: Forty Years, The Playmate Book, and Inside the Playboy Mansion is a trilogy of hardcover coffee-table books by Gretchen Edgren. The Playboy Book covers the first four decades of Playboy's publication. It includes a wealth of information and has a complete list of celebrity pictorials up to the 40th anniversary issue, and a foldout containing small reproductions of every centerfold up to that time. The Playmate Book includes photos and information on every Playmate to appear in the magazine from Marilyn Monroe (12/53) to Victoria Silvstedt (12/96). Inside the Playboy Mansion provides an illustrated tour of America's most famous party pad.

5. Any of the anniversary issues (20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th and 50th) have a certain amount of retrospective information.

6. The Bare Facts Video Guide is a reference work published by Craig Hosoda that lists all nude movie appearances by a fairly complete list of performers. The 2001 edition is the most recent one, with a new update due sometime in 2004. It's available by mail order only, in both hard copy and CD-ROM format. I'd recommend the CD-ROM, since it also contains any nude magazine appearances for all listed performers; appearances by male actors; and a listing of people who only had one nude scene in their careers. The hard copy no longer includes these things. I'm not sure if Playmates are still listed in the hard copy version.

Where can I find an index for newsstand specials?

I don't have such an index, so asking me for one will do no good. While I know that several online people have their own private indexes, in various stages of completeness, I know of only one that is available on the Web. If you go to the Playboy Newsstand Special Index Teaser Page you will find a downloadable demo and info on how to order the complete index (cost $15 U.S.). This index is now in Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf) rather than in the former Envoy format.

Where can I buy back issues of Playboy online?

Ken Ritchie is the leading dealer of Playboy publications and collectibles on the Internet. He now maintains two separate Playboy-related sites. Pbmags.com is the place to find back issues of the magazine, newsstand specials and other publications. They stock every issue of Playboy back to #1, in a variety of conditions and at the best prices you're likely to find. His other site is devoted to Playboy collectibles other than publications.

Can I get an index like this in hard copy?

I don't offer a hard copy version of the index, nor can I make it available as a downloadable file. There used to be a spiral-bound index available from Ken Ritchie collectibles, but it doesn't seem to be offered anymore, and as far as I know was never updated after 1995.

Considering that a hard copy index would become obsolete within a month, this constantly updated online version is the way to go. Feel free to print out any of the pages here if you need a reference to take with you.

Where can I find a list of playmates' homepages?

Several playmates have their own personal pages on the Playboy website. There's a site here with links to almost 100 official playmate sites outside of the Playboy site.

Can you send me pictures of ...?

No. I don't have the time or inclination to scan and send pictures to people who send me these requests. I very occasionally make exceptions for special cases (like models who have appeared in the magazine and would like to see their pictures).
