ATP! Album Review: Demi Lovato - Demi

Demi Lovato first flew into the spotlight when she was picked up by the magical hands of Disney along with the likes of Miley Cyrus and Zac Efron. Fast forward a few years and she is now focusing solely on her music career attacking the music industry with her fourth studio album, which has all the makings for a perfect pop record.

Demi opens with the first single released from the album, ‘Heart Attack,’ telling tales of the woe’s of falling in love, mixing it with acoustic guitar melodies and a chorus that allows Demi to belt out the notes, impressing us with the power in her voice. The following tracks, ‘Made In The USA’ and ‘Without The Love’ are nothing to rant and rave about, they do their part in filling the album with easy-on-the-ear songs, but don’t do much to stop you from hovering over the skip button.

‘Neon Lights’ however, is where things really begin to heat up. If this isn’t a club hit this summer then we have no idea what will be. Opening with Demi’s sultry vocal tone, the song quickly develops into a full-blown pop anthem. It’s a little more mainstream than what we expected of Demi Lovato but her voice works with the produced track incredibly well. If you don’t find yourself throwing your arms up in the air and busting your sassiest moves around for all to see, you’re doing something wrong. Definitely one of the standout tracks off the whole record.

A strong percentage of this album is lyrically built on heartbreak and love, from the ballads such as ‘Nightingale’ and ‘Warrior’ providing Demi a few minutes to show off the powerful vocal talent that she harbours, with the enchanting playing of piano keys and strings to make them that little more epic. Truly emphasising how far Demi Lovato has come since her Camp Rock days and how much she deserves to have a successful music career.

The album also comes complete with a duet, at first glance the idea of Demi Lovato and Cher Lloyd producing a song together might be enough to make you vomit candy, but swallow your sugar coated barf down my friends, ‘Really Don’t Care’ is the perfect remedy to wipe that frown from your face and do your most fabulous walk whilst blasting this in your ears. Singing of a boy that totally screwed around, this is the perfect break-up anthem, so put down that pot of ice cream and turn this up because you won’t stop smiling for the whole three and a half minutes. Cher Lloyd's brief appearance seems a little unnecessary, but heck, we’ll go with it!

Overall, the record is a fine piece of work from Miss Lovato, it shows just how strong her vocal chords are and the variation of styles that she can completely work to make her own. If you’re not a fan of pop music, you’ll absolutely hate it, but everyone has their little guilty pleasures – except we don’t even feel the slightest bit guilty for listening to this album at full volume.
