"Although the Middle East conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen is escalating, we hope it will not worsen to affect hajj pilgrimage," Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said.Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia has expressed hope that armed conflicts between Saudi Arabia and Yemen will not last long as it can have humanitarian effects, including on hajj pilgrimage.
"Although the Middle East conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen is escalating, we hope it will not worsen to affect hajj pilgrimage," Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said here on Friday.
Saudi Arabia and Gulf States coalition have been carrying out military operations against Shiite Houthi militias who have threatened the Yemeni Government led by President Abd. Rabbuh Mansur Al Hadi.
Citing Yemens close proximity to Mecca and Medina, the minister expressed hope that the conflict would not worsen.
"Whatever is the reason, a war claims lives. We hope the conflict will be settled immediately," he added.
Earlier, Saudi Ambassador to the US Adil Al Jubair noted that military operations have been part of the efforts to retain a legitimate government.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates have stated they will protect the sovereign government of President Hadi so that Yemen and its people are also protected from the aggression of Houthi militias.
"Indonesia will monitor the developments with the hope that the conflict will not escalate further," Minister Lukman emphasized.(*)
