Fist of Fury DVD (1972)

Unless you managed to get hold of a pre-1984 video copy of "Fist of Fury", you will have had to make do with a badly panned and scanned, censored print of this film. It's little wonder then that arguably the best of Bruce Lee's films has in a few weeks become one of the fastest selling DVDs ever in the UK. (Our review copy was snatched away to satisfy demand!) Even by their own high standards, Hong Kong Legends have surpassed themselves with this release.

Buying Kung Fu videos in the 80s and 90s was very much about lowering your personal standards to make do with shoddy picture and sound quality. Maybe it was all worth it, because to see "Fist of Fury" restored, remastered, and uncut (complete with the nunchaku sequences) on DVD is to wake up from a nightmare into impossible fantasy. The picture quality is at times so fresh that it looks as if the film was made recently.

A new 5.1 sound mix powers-up Lee's kicks and punches to shattering effect. Particular attention has also been paid to Joseph Koo's music score, which is now allowed to add mood and tension through clever speaker steering.

A wealth of extras is there for you to indulge in, including four photo galleries, an animated biography (as on "The Big Boss" DVD), and trailers. Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan provides another fine commentary, which, as always, is a careful balance of anecdotes, cultural dissection, and thoroughly enjoyable expertise.

With wonderful discs like this, there has never been a better time to become, or indeed be a fan of Bruce Lee.
