Fox has announced that it is dropping its pilot season.

The network's entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly revealed the news during his executive session at the TCA press tour today (January 13).

Reilly described the system - which has been running on the network since 1986 - as "highly inefficient" and said that Fox won't be ordering pilots next development season.

He said: "We are going to be bypassing pilot season.

"The broadcast development system was built in a different era and is highly inefficient. It is nothing short of a miracle talent can still produce anything of quality in that environment."

Reilly explained that developing and producing series throughout the year will be "more talent-friendly" and will give Fox "more manoeuverability and more scheduling and marketing flexibility".

The executive cited examples of shows that Fox already has in the works, including limited series 24: Live Another Day and Broadchurch remake Gracepoint.
