Senior Wafd Party members object to coalition with Muslim Brothers

Wafd Party executive committee member Mohamed Sarhan said on Thursday that certain members of the committee object to a coalition with the Muslim Brotherhood group’s Freedom and Justice Party, on the grounds that the previous committee decided against any alliance with the group.

“A coalition with the Muslim Brothers is a sensitive issue, especially to our Coptic members,” he said. “Alliance with religious parties contradicts the liberal principles of our party.”

The executive committee had agreed to join an initiative named the National Coalition for the Sake of Egypt, which comprised 18 different political parties.
