Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS DLC Ending Soon, Director Says

The DLC campaign for Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS is coming to an end soon. That's according to game director Masahiro Sakurai, who shared the insight as part of Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets, translated by SourceGaming (via GoNintendo).

He was talking about the future of the Fire Emblem series, and whether or not any upcoming Smash Bros. games might include characters from that franchise.

"How much a character will please the players, how unique they are--there are a lot of factors that go into deciding a character's inclusion," he explained. "I don't know whether Fire Emblem will have many more games in the future, but it's not as if we have a stipulation that says, 'We have to include the protagonist of the next Fire Emblem game.' Moreover, we don't even know if there'll be another Smash game."

This is not the first time Sakurai has talked about the potential end of the Smash Bros. series. A year ago this month, Sakurai said he didn't think Melee or Brawl would get sequels, either. If the Smash Bros. franchise does extend beyond the latest game, he may not be a part of it, the developer suggested.

Interviewer: You do say that every time [about Smash Bros. games coming to an end], though, so I do wonder if maybe it'll just keep on going forever.

Sakurai: And I'll become the Smash craftsman? (laughs)

Interviewer: Yes. After all, including the DLC, you've been involved with Smash since the beginning.

Sakurai: Well, DLC is coming to an end soon, too, y'know.

On December 15, Nintendo will hold what it's calling the "final" Nintendo Direct briefing for Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS. This presentation will talk more about the latest DLC character, Final Fantasy's Cloud, and also potentially include some other announcements. Sakurai will be featured during the event.

Nintendo has released quite a lot of Super Smash Bros. DLC thus far, including characters stages, costumes, and more. Here's a list of all of the DLC released for the game to date.

With more than 4 million copies sold, Super Smash Bros. is one of Nintendo's best-selling Wii U games. It has shifted more than 7.3 million copies on 3DS, bringing the game's total to more than 11.3 million.
