Zeitgeist Films has acquired Margarethe Von Trotta’s Hannah Arendt from Match Factory.
The film, which stars Barbara Sukowa, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Hannah Arendt is a portrait of the writer who shook the world and coined the phrase “the banality of evil” during her coverage of the Adolf Eichmann trial in a five-part series in The New Yorker. A media circus ensued and Arendt had to fiercely defend herself when some of the ideas expressed in the articles caused controversy within the Jewish community.
The film also stars Janet McTeer as the writer Mary McCarthy and Julia Jentsch (Sophie Scholl) as Arendt’s loyal assistant.
Hannah Arendt will open at Film Forum in New York on May 29, with a nationwide release to follow.
Zeitgeist distributed von Trotta’s previous film, Vision, also starring Sukowa.
The company’s upcoming slate also includes Mikael Buch’s Let My People Go!, Neil Barsky’s Koch and Jeremy Frindel’s One Track Heart.
