KEARNY -- Sitting 2nd Ward Councilman Jonathan Giordano died on Saturday. He was 50.

Giordano was a lifelong resident of Kearny and graduated from the town's high school in 1984. He attended New Jersey City University for two years before joining his family's business, West Hudson Millwork.

Mayor Al Santos described Giordano as someone who did a "perfect job" representing his community.

"He was a very kind and caring person he truly loved his community," the mayor said.

Giordano was first sworn into office in 2015 to fill the seat of longtime Councilwoman Laura Cifelli-Pettigrew after she retired.

Hurricane Sandy devastated Giordano's carpentry business, telling The Jersey Journal after his swearing in that he had 5 feet of water in his warehouse. He supported the town's plan to construct a storm water pumping system near Schuyler Avenue.

Along with his family business, he also served as president of Josam Reality. Both businesses are located in Kearny.

He was the Council Liaison for the Planning Board and served on the police, water, license, and lighting committees.

"Jon was a great friend to the community and a respected public servant," the Kearny Police Department said in a post on Facebook. "May he rest in peace."

Giordano leaves behind his wife, Ivy, and young son Enzo. His cause of death was not immediately available.
