Fire damages Daily News printing plant in Jersey City

A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a Daily News printing plant in Jersey City early this morning, officials told The Jersey Journal.

Firefighters responding on a 1:31 a.m. alarm to the building on Theodore Conrad Drive near Liberty State Park that houses a large printing press called in a second alarm 12 minutes later, Fire Director Armando Roman said. Burning ink made for a stubborn blaze but the fire was under control at 2:12 a.m., he said.

One civilian was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center but no additional information on the individual was available, Roman said.

The cause of the fire has not yet bee determined and investigators are on the scene, Roman said.

Roman described the building as a big warehouse and printing facility. He said the fire broke out in an area containing printing presses and said that portion of the building sustained heavy damage, according to The Associated Press.

A spokeswoman for the Daily News, Jennifer Mauer, in a statement, described the fire as a "small mechanical fire," according to The Associated Press. She said the blaze disrupted part of the newspaper's Saturday production but said the Sunday print run was expected to be normal.
