Hillsboro Main Library expansion includes art gallery on second floor

The library isn't just a place for books. At the recently renovated

, a hallway on the second floor expansion is now home to a rotating art gallery. The first show will be displayed at the library's grand opening celebration on Sunday, featuring the works of 18 local artists.

Hillsboro painter Anne Ferguson, 80, helped coordinate the show - 35 original works, all of which are for sale.

When the Shute Park Library opened in 1975, an art gallery was also an element of the space. But when more room was needed for library books, the gallery went away.

Library Expansion

Hillsboro reference librarian Anne Goetz said the library planned to re-establish another gallery after renovations to the main library. With the help of Ferguson and Martin Conley of

and Ferguson's friend Cheryl Claar, all the artwork was gathered and hung earlier this week.

"We have a wide variety of art on display for this first show," Goetz said. "I think it really shows off the community well."

The gallery space will be open for artists to display artwork that can be hung on the wall.

The Hillsboro Main Library's grand opening will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 12 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, followed by music, dance and other entertainment. The library is located at 2850 N.E. Brookwood Parkway. Call 503- 615-6500 or visit
