Twitch starts streaming live music today

Live streaming service Twitch is broadening its broadcast horizons today. Primarily the domain of live video game streams of titles like League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Hearthstone and Minecraft, the company is expanding its offerings with live music.

Twitch will host a live streamed performance by DJ and producer Steve Aoki today at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET. Streamed from Ibiza, Spain, it will be Aoki's inaugural broadcast on Twitch.

In a release, Twitch said the company greenlighted the live concert in response to feedback from its users. In a survey, more than 80 percent of Twitch viewers expressed interest in watching live music on Twitch, the company said.

"We pride ourselves on listening to both the wants and needs of our community and then working to implement these requests," said Kevin Lin, chief operating officer of Twitch. "Since live music is something a lot of our users have requested, it will be interesting to test these waters with a popular artist like Steve Aoki."

Twitch has generally enforced that users stream "live and pre-recorded videos of video game related activities," but has relaxed rules about broadcasting through software like The Playroom on PlayStation 4. Through The Playroom, PS4 owners host non-gaming broadcast and talk shows, something Sony itself is embracing with new content for the free app.

Steve Aoki's performance is not the only recent music-based broadcast to crop up on Twitch lately; Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst recently took to Twitch to play games and stream from his music studio. Twitch previously broadcast performances from Video Games Live, the touring concert series that performs live renditions of video game music.
