Monsieur Periné set for San Diego debut

Share

Monsieur Periné is a young band that hails from Colombia and won Best New Artist honors at the 2015 Latin Grammy Awards. Drawing from the pioneering Gypsy-swing style championed by Belgian jazz guitar giant Django Reinhardt more than 80 years ago, Monsieur Periné mixes in elements of cumbia, tango, danzón, bolero and pop. Its instrumentation includes the Argentinian bandoneon and the Colombian charango, while breezy vocalist Catalina Garcia brings welcome verve to Monsieur Periné ‘s “swing a la Colombiana” whether singing in Spanish or French. The group’s latest album, “Caja de Música” (“Music Box”), was produced by Calle 13’s Eduardo “Vistante” Cabra and features a vocal cameo by Café Tacuba’s Ruben Albarran. Clearly, Monsieur Periné’s star is on the rise.

Details: 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 3. The Music Box, 1337 India St., downtown. $15-$50 (must be 18 or older to attend). (619) 795-1337 or musicboxsd.com
