About SPU News
Arab Spring or Arab Winter?
As the news reports of Arab “spring” quickly turn to reports of “winter,” the media often neglects the voices of everyday women and artists who are continually resisting and seeking democratic change. We hear about the Shiite and Sunni, Islam and women, democratic turmoil, and refugee trauma, but are we missing other stories?
Khawla Hadi, a translator for Iraqi-Syrian refugees at the trauma center at Lutheran Community Services Northwest, and Marwa al-Mtowaq, an Iraqi-American activist poet recently returned from Baghdad, will join SPU Professor of English Kimberly Segall in a panel discussion on Monday, May 19, 7 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Segall is the author of Performing Democracy in Iraq and South Africa, and has spent more than 20 years working as an activist and volunteer in Middle Eastern and African communities.
The event is free and wheelchair accessible. To request disability accommodation, contact the Disability Services office in advance of the event at 206-281-2272, TTY 206-281-2224, or
